St. Joe A Gram

This last quarter my school team, the Blazing Angels, did one of our St. Joe A Grams.  We drove out to Gayleen Mitchell’s house.  She fell down a flight of stairs and broke her pelvis.  We sang her a song that Mrs. Hacker wrote "We heard that you were down and want to cheer you up, praying and praying that you get well and get back on your feet..."  The song was about getting better soon.  She really enjoyed it!

St. Joe A Gram

This year the teachers decided to divide all the classes into three service groups. The students entered a St. Joe A Gram into the auction, and people wanting us to sing a song, or help them do something bought them.  The “Amazing Believers” are led by Mrs. Dostal and Miss Liewer.
The “Amazing Believers” would sing a song to Dennis Hytrek, who recently had an accident and broke both ankles and feet.  They sang a remix of happy birthday that was telling Dennis we were praying for him.  Dennis really enjoyed it and so did the kids.

Basketball Hoops

Over the summer St Joseph's  received two new basketball hoops.  They were donated by the Fitness First of Atkinson. They are much better than the old hoops that were there. The new hoops are able to be adjusted which makes it easier for the little kids to shoot baskets. The hoops also can go higher for the older kids. The baskets are being used every recess. The new baskets were not the only thing that the school received. We also received around a dozen new basketballs to use.  We are very grateful to have received the new things we have, and we thank the donors.

Bake Sale

St. Joseph's Jr High had a huge bake sale, everything was 50 cents. When all the kids came in to the bake sale we almost sold out of everything. We raised $98.00. All the money will go to the local food pantry. Many of the parents took part in the sale and came in with their kids.
The posters that we made attracted peoples' attention. I thought we were not going to sell the amount of items that we did. First all the kids came in to the sale with their class and then after school some came in again and bought more items with their parents. It was a blow out sale for a small town and a small school. Its amazing how much difference 6th, 7th, and 8th graders can make just by cooking and selling  goodies for only 50 cents!

Book Fair

The end of January we celebrate Catholic Schools' Week.  During CSW, the Scholastic Book Fair came as it does every year during CSW.  Kids, parents, and community members can go to the fair and purchase fun books to read.  Posters, pencils, bookmarks, and erasers are also available.  All the students get a $5 gift certificate to get a book of their choice from St. Joe’s Home & School.  The gift certificate has to be used for book purchases.  All the kids were excited and appreciative to get the certificate.

Catholic Schools Week!

The 2013 Catholic Schools Week was a success! Everyone had a great time and enjoyed our daily activities! Aside from work, once a day, during Catholic Schools Week,  all of the school got together and did a fun activity.
On Monday, we wore our pajamas, and the teachers served the students breakfast. For Tuesday we wore our Team Jack shirts and a few students traveled to KBRX in O'Neill to be interviewed in the "Dog House." On Wednesday, we had Mass followed by muffins and doughnuts and juice afterwards. On Thursday Students wore hats for "Hats Off To St. Joseph’s Students Day" and played "Are You Smarter Than A St. Joseph's Student" game. On Friday we wore our St. Joseph's shirts and celebrated Mass at the Good Samaritan Center. That concludes the Catholic Schools Week of 2013.

Dissecting in Science

Dissecting in Science

Recently in science, the 6th-8th graders have been studying biomes, and how organisms adapt to their environment. On Tuesday, February 19, we started an experiment. In our experiment, we had to dissect an owl pellet. Gross? Yes, I know. An owl pellet is the owl’s wastes that it can’t digest, but it comes from the owl’s mouth, his vomit. During this experiment, everyone got a pair of latex gloves and a pair of tweezers. We found numerous bones of rodents, moles, and birds. We then sorted the bones in a sorting chart. I learned that sometimes to learn, you might have to get a little dirty, but that’s ok!

Science

Right now in science we are growing beans in a box.  We are trying to show a tropism, phototropism; that is the response to light.  The other tropisms are hydrotropism, thigmotrophism, and geotropism.  We have had them planted for a couple of weeks, but with little sunlight they are not sprouted yet.  We have been watering and watching them.  One students has sprouted and is making its way to the light through the cut out in the red paper.
